Unexplained church death linked to fall

Police are no longer treating the death of man found at a church as suspicious.

Stephen Ayre, 51, of Westmorland Road, Maidstone, was discovered near St Peter and Paul’s Church, Aylesford, on Friday, February 26 at 7.30pm.

He had suffered head injuries, which police said were “consistent with a fall” and are no longer considered "unexplained".

Mr Ayre was taken by ambulance to Maidstone Hospital and was later transferred to a London hospital where he died the following day.

An inquest into Mr Ayre’s death was opened and adjourned on Friday, March 5.

Detective Chief Inspector Jon Bumpus said: “The appeal for information is to establish if anyone else was in the area of the churchyard between 6.30 and 8.00pm, and in particular, speak to anyone who may be able to help officers and the man’s family understand how he came by his injuries.”

Call police in west Kent on 01732 370 217, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
