Teams prepare for gruelling challenge

The team from Maidstone police
Teams from the town’s services and gyms are gearing themselves up to compete in a high-intensity challenge this weekend to help raise funds for the army.

Eight teams have entered this year’s 36 Challenge, to be held on Saturday, with hope of winning the champion’s trophy.

To be in with a chance of taking home the prize, the contestants will have to complete a series of challenges including a 500 cycle race and 3km row, timed press-ups, shoulder dips, 3km row, tricep dips and burpees - followed by a relay race.

Organisers hope the event, which was launched in 2007 in aid of the 36 Engineer Regiment, based in the Invicta Army Barracks, will help raise £4,500 for the soldier’s welfare fund.

This year the competition is held in memory of three soldiers from the force who have died in Afghanistan - Lance Corporal Ivano Violino, Warrant Officer Class 2 David Markland and Sapper Guy Mellors.

The 36 Engineers hope to do their fallen comrades proud and have entered two teams for the challenge to increase their chances – one British and one made up of Gurkha soldiers.

Competing against them will be teams from Kent Police, The Village Hotel, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, Maidstone Leisure Centre, Maidstone’s under 17 rugby squad and current champions Bob Prowse Gym.

Sergeant Andy Bell, who is leading the police squad, said: “Our team’s training is in full swing and being one of nine teams taking part - I expect the standard will be very high.

“This will be a gruelling challenge, but it will be well worth the effort by supporting such a worthy cause.

“Bob Prowse Health Club has won the event for two years running and we would love to knock them off the top spot.

“I would encourage everyone in Maidstone to support the teams taking part by attending the event and donating money. I would also like to thank the Swallows Leisure Centre in Sittingbourne who kindly let us use their facilities to train for the event.”

The challenge will kick off at 10am at the Mall Chequers shopping centre.

The Mayor of Maidstone will open the competition and the winner will be presented with the Three Six trophy by the Commanding Officer of 36 Royal Engineers, Lt Col Simon Hulme.
