The Thompson family after race
Pink costumes were donned
Thousands of women donned their best pink outfits and braved the heavy rain on Sunday to complete this year’s first Race for Life, Yourmaidstone reports.

The fully-booked 5k race kicked off at 11am in Mote Park in Maidstone with torrential rain but the runners and walkers were greeted with welcome sunshine towards the finish line.

Despite the wet weather 4,000 women of all ages ran, jogged or walked the route through the park in Maidstone town centre to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

Among the ladies taking part were the Thompson family – 22-year-old Katie, her mother Diane, her sister Vicky, 21, and her grandmother Betty Morris, all from Maidstone.

The family take part in the Maidstone Race for Life each year in memory of Diane’s first-born daughter, Sally, who died from Wilms tumours – a rare form of cancer of the kidneys - four days before her fourth birthday in 1986.

This year had an extra importance as it marked five years since 78-year-old Betty was given the all-clear from breast cancer and is now out of remission.

When the family crossed the finish line they let off pink balloons in memory of Sally and to mark Betty’s successful recovery.

Katie said: “It went really well, we got absolutely soaked but it was definitely worth it.

"My nan did really well and we all let our balloons off at the end, which was really nice.”

Cancer Research UK area event manager Natasha Eitenne said: “The Maidstone Race for Life saw 4,000 ladies take part in a fantastic event.

“I was so pleased to see so many arrive even though we had very unpredictable weather.

"But the wet weather did not dampen the spirits of all the amazing women who took part.

“I'm so proud of Maidstone and I had a really great day.”

Sunday’s race was the first of two Race for Life events to be held at Mote Park, the second will take place on June 7.

Already 4,000 women have signed up and filled all of the places for the June race, including a KOS Media team who are aiming to raise hundreds of pounds.

The full KOS Media team, which includes sub editors, reporters, sales staff and administrators, will be Erica Jones, Jo Nicoll, Lucy Williams, Anna White, Clare Bairam and Sally Ingram.

You can sponsor the KOS Media team at www.raceforlife.org/kosmedia or visit www.raceforlife.org to find out more.

The next Maidstone Race for Life will be followed by others across the county, including Tunbridge Wells, Gillingham, Herne Bay, Canterbury, Folkestone and Margate.
